We had a pretty scary couple of days this past week. Tuesday was my birthday and we spent it in Kosair Children's Hospital. It all started on Friday night. Kyle had been to the doctor for his one month check-up and it went really well, but he has a little bit of granuloma tissue left from his umbilical cord. The nurse put silver nitrate on it to dry it up (a common procedure). Well, Kyle has a deep belly button and the silver nitrate got on his skin around the belly button. This caused a chemical burn that was swollen by Friday night. We called the doctor first thing on Saturday morning, and they said to put bacitracin zinc on it and it should heal up. We did that all weekend, and there was no improvements. On Monday morning I called the Doctor's office to set up an appointment because I thought it looked infected and Kyle's temp. was a little high (99.8). We went to the Doctor's office at 1:00 and Kyle's temperature was 101.6! They sent us straight to Kosair's and when we got there his temperature was up to 102. They did a spinal tap and took some blood cultures to check for other infections, and then they hooked him up to an IV with antibiotics. His temperature was maintained with Tylenol but that night it spiked at 103.1! On Tuesday morning his temperature was normal and continued to be normal without any Tylenol for the rest of the time. They continued the antibiotics for 48 hours and watched the cultures for any signs of infections. During the day Tuesday Kyle was back to his adorable cooing self and his belly button was already looking better. Thank God, the cultures never grew anything and the doctors concluded that the sliver nitrate caused a chemical burn that got a surface infection. His temperature got so high because his immune system isn't developed enough and didn't "know" how to react. Kyle was sent home Wednesday night with no medications. We thank God that it wasn't anything worse and we thank everyone for their prayers.

Settling In
Hello world. Kyle did catch my cold, but he is getting over it. He's starting to get on a schedule (fingers crossed :) and sleeping pretty well. It doesn't matter what you do to prepare, but nothing can prepare you for the joy or the challenge of parenting. I've learned quite a bit over the past three weeks. Kyle is truly a blessing from God, and Ryan and I are so overjoyed at his beauty and wonder.

Home At Last
Kyle came home on Monday, and has had lots of friendly visitors. His 1 week appointment was on Wednesday. The check up went well. He is gaining weight and has already gained back to his birth weight (which is something they hope for in two weeks). He has been wanting to stay awake at night but with some prayers and training this is improving. I got a head cold in the hospital, and I think he may be getting a little bit of that as well. So much for a sterile environment :).
